Nathan Fielder has unpacked his new documentary You Can See Everything, including an unexpected phone call he received from Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes from behind bars.

The new A24 film is arguably the buzziest release of the past few months, earning the second best opening for a documentary at the domestic box office behind 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11. Despite its limited release, people have been travelling far and wide to see it, with sellout screenings and queues out the door.

Directed by Fielder and filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, the documentary follows the disgraced Theranos founder in the weeks before she began serving an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors.

The filmmakers were given extraordinary access to Holmes, her partner Billy Evans and their children, spending 34 days documenting the family’s life at their California home before she went to prison in May 2023.

But what starts as a fairly straightforward documentary soon takes some unexpected turns. We won’t go any further to avoid spoiling it, but just know that it’s well worth your time.

Given filming took place over a three-year period, Fielder is glad to see the finished product out in the world. Speaking to WIRED a few weeks prior to its release, the comedian revealed that he hadn’t heard from Holmes in over six months. But this has since changed.

Fielder, who gave an update just before the film was released, told the outlet, “Actually – on Friday last week – I looked at my phone in the morning and saw I had two missed calls, and on the voicemail transcript it said that it was a call from the prison…

“And then I saw on the thing, it says: You’re receiving a call from Elizabeth Holmes. And I have not heard from her. She has not called me in over six months. I have not heard from her in any way. But I missed the calls, and then as I was looking at my phone, a third call came in from the same number.”

As for why she continued to ring, it’s because the recipient is unable to call back and so the inmate has to keep trying until they get a response.

“So I answered the phone, and I said, ‘Hey, how’s it going?’ She asked how I was doing. I asked her if she had seen any stuff about the film coming out and how she felt about it all,” Fielder continued.

“She told me that she had seen some stuff, but most things she just isn’t seeing, so she’s heard things, but she hasn’t really read anything. And then, at the end, she said to me – ‘I trust you.’”
