It ties back to the darkness within them both &#8211; as Charles puts it, \u201cKind recognises kind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In John Steinbeck\u2019s original <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/east-of-eden\/\">East of Eden<\/a> novel, Charles (Mike Faist) gets his scar while working on the Trask family farm. A few years after his brother Adam (Christopher Abbott) joins the army, Charles is angry and lonely, and grows frustrated with a boulder that proves hard to move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSuddenly he lost his temper. The little smile came on his face, and he fought the stone as though it were a man, in silent fury. He drove his bar deep behind it and threw his whole weight back,\u201d the text reads.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bar slips and smashes him in the face, leaving him with a \u201clong and crinkled scar\u201d on his \u201cforehead from hairline to a point between his eyebrows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10043\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10043\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-3.jpg\" alt=\"Charles and Cathy in East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like the novel, the Netflix series shows how Cathy (<a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/florence-pugh\/\">Florence Pugh<\/a>) gets hers under much darker circumstances. After her relationship with a brothel owner turns violent, he brutally beats her before leaving her for dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s actually the injury that eventually brings Cathy into Charles and Adam&#8217;s lives. After crawling to the Trask farm, she\u2019s taken in by Adam, who cares for her while she recovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles is far more suspicious of their new guest, but Cathy appears fascinated by him. On the night of her wedding to Adam, she drugs her new husband before going to Charles&#8217; room, where she touches the scar on his forehead shortly before the pair sleep together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an easy detail to write off as another sign of their strange connection, but those matching scars have a much deeper meaning. They come directly from Steinbeck\u2019s novel and tie both characters into the biblical story the entire book is built around.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The meaning behind Charles and Cathy&#8217;s matching scars in East of Eden<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9992\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9992\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-7.jpg\" alt=\"Charles and Cathy in East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-7.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-7-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-7-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles and <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/10\/06\/east-of-eden-netflix-what-happened-to-cathy-when-she-was-five-book-change\/\">Cathy\u2019s scars<\/a> are generally interpreted as versions of the biblical Mark of Cain, and Netflix itself has confirmed the connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its official East of Eden ending explainer, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> describes Cathy and Charles as kindred spirits, noting that they \u201cboth even bear a forehead scar that binds them together as children of Cain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re now wondering who on earth Cain is and what any of this has to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/10\/01\/true-story-behind-netflixs-east-of-eden-as-its-inspired-by-john-steinbecks-real-family\/\">East of Eden<\/a>, we need to briefly head back to the Book of Genesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cain and Abel are the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain works the land while Abel is a shepherd, and the brothers each make an offering to God. God favours Abel\u2019s offering over Cain\u2019s, causing Cain to become jealous and murder his brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As punishment, Cain is forced into exile. But God also places a mark on him so that anyone who finds him won\u2019t kill him. Just as Cain becomes jealous when God favours his brother\u2019s offering, Charles is devastated when their father Cyrus (Tracy Letts) prefers Adam\u2019s birthday gift of a stray puppy to the expensive knife Charles worked to buy him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Charles later attacks Adam and comes close to killing him. The parallel then repeats with Adam\u2019s own sons, Cal (Joseph Zada) and <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/10\/05\/east-of-eden-netflix-ending-why-did-cathy-leave-everything-to-aron-will-book\/\">Aron (Joe Anders)<\/a>. Cal is the Cain figure, while Aron takes Abel\u2019s place. Once again, jealousy over a father\u2019s approval ultimately ends in tragedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even their names give it away: Charles and Adam, then Cal and Aron &#8211; both beginning with C and A each time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while Charles and Cathy\u2019s scars have very different origins, placing the same mark on both characters visually connects them to the darker side of Steinbeck\u2019s story. And it adds to the fact that Charles clearly recognises the darkness in Cathy unlike his brother, because he knows it within himself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>East of Eden&#8217;s title is another Cain and Abel reference<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10042\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10042\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/12-3.jpg\" alt=\"Lee in East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/12-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/12-3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/12-3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cain connection goes even further than the scars &#8211; it connects directly to the title. In the Bible, after Cain kills Abel, it says he leaves God\u2019s presence and settles in the land of Nod, \u201ceast of Eden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, Steinbeck wasn\u2019t being subtle about how important this story was to his novel. Cain and Abel are also discussed multiple times by the characters, with Samuel Hamilton declaring in the book: \u201cWe are Cain\u2019s children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Netflix adaptation keeps the biblical connection too. Lee (Hoon Lee) and Samuel (Ciar\u00e1n Hinds) discuss Cain and Abel while exploring the meaning of timshel, the Hebrew word that ultimately becomes crucial to the entire story.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Lee explains, timshel means \u201cthou mayest\u201d. \u201cYou <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> triumph over sin\u2026 It offers a choice,\u201d he says. \u201cOur future isn\u2019t determined by God or by our past. Even Cain, in his weakness and filth, and the murder of his brother, can still choose his course because timshel. Speaking to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2026-10-05\/east-of-eden-adaptation-zoe-kazan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about bringing the book\u2019s lengthy discussions of Genesis to the screen, she said, \u201cI had to find a way to make it emotional and personal and about character.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI worked really hard on the portion where they discuss Cain and Abel in the naming scene that happens in episode 3. And then when to return to it in episode 5, when they discuss timshel. That went through many, many, many revisions to make it as emotional as possible, as connected to character as possible. And honestly, as brief as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what makes those scars even more interesting than simply marking Cathy and Charles as the show\u2019s \u201cbad\u201d characters. East of Eden repeatedly asks whether people are destined to inherit the sins and darkness of the people who came before them, or whether they can choose to become something different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles and Cathy might carry the Mark of Cain, and Cal might find himself repeating many of his uncle\u2019s mistakes decades later.
