Love Is Blind creator reveals what Monica really found in Stephen’s messages off camera

His ‘kinky’ and ‘disgusting’ messages to another woman got him axed from the show

The creator of Love Is Blind, Chris Coelen, has spoken out about the explicit text messages incident with Stephen and Monica that ended their relationship. Unfortunately for viewers, the cameras weren’t rolling when the drama all kicked off, but Chris spoke to Daily Mail to clear up any missing pieces of what went down before Stephen left the show.

In case you missed it, Monica and Stephen broke up and quit the show in episode eight, Dirty Laundry, that showed Monica confronting Stephen about some wild text messages involving “dirty kinks” and “fetishes” that he’d sent the night before. He originally claimed he was drunk, but Monica wasn’t having any of it – she had him out of the apartment within five minutes.

Chris firstly explained that he caught Monica and Stephen “after they had the conversation,” when Monica had already seen the texts. She had “confronted him” after she saw a text on his phone, and by the time the cameras arrived, they were “in the process of being done.”

Stephen was “out in the hall talking to Garrett outside the apartment,” which makes sense because Taylor was comforting Monica at the same time. During this scene, Stephen came back into the apartment, which Chris noted is “just like what you see on the show.”

So, what didn’t the cameras catch? Chris pointed out that “if something happens off camera, we try to explain that through whatever we do film,” but that isn’t always easy. The camera crew missed the beginning and “certainly weren’t there at the sleep centre with him,” meaning we’ll probably never know the real truth unless Stephen could prove it somehow.

Viewers were particularly upset to miss such a vital part of the show’s drama, but Chris defended his camera crew, stating that “this is not Big Brother. We are documenting people living their real lives.” He pressed that it wouldn’t fit the show’s purpose to “have cameras following them 27/7.”

He continued: “It genuinely is an experiment that tries to provide them an opportunity and the support to create an environment where if they find someone they’re interested in marrying, that they actually are able to make up their mind for themselves about whether they want to do that.

“And I don’t think the best way to do that is always to be present, right? They need to have time by themselves. We don’t mount cameras in the bedroom. That’s not what we’re really about.”
