Here’s everything you need to know about Warren Jeffs from Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

Netflix just dropped its newest and most traumatic series, Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey and fans are all wondering what Warren Jeffs is up to now.

The show focuses on how the Fundamentalists Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) controlled the lives of its members with leader Warren Jeffs at the centre of it all. As of right now, Warren Jeffs is currently being held in prison in Texas. He’s not eligible for parole until July 2038, at the earliest.You’ve probably got a bunch of questions since finishing the show and to be honest, so do I. Like is he still running the group? How many wives and children does he have? And how did he even make all his money?

Here’s a rundown of exactly how Warren Jeffs ended up in prison and whether he’s still in charge of the FLDS we know from Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey on Netflix.

Who is Warren Jeffs?

Okay so, Warren Jeffs is the “president” and “prophet” of the FLDS – yes even now whilst he is in prison. He became leader when his father, Rulon Jeffs, died in 2002. After becoming leader, Jeffs had multiple wives and took control of the members. He was in charge of everyone’s finances and apparently cut them off entirely from the outside world.

Rulon Jeffs, Warren’s father, was the eighth prophet of the Mormon Church. He led the largest religious group in North America and practised and promoted marrying several people. When Rulon Jeffs died he was 92-years-old. By the time he died, he had around 20 wives and 60 children, the New York Times reported.

Warren Jeffs is currently 62-years-old

By the time Warren Jeffs became leader of the FLDS in 2002, he had around 20 wives. However when he was arrested he had a total of 78 with around 24 of them being underage, according to the Washington Post.

How did Warren Jeffs make his money?

Apparently Warren Jeffs owned around $100,000,000 worth of property by 2006. Distractify reported that he also got free or low-cost labour from his followers, including the men and boys who worked on his construction projects. In addition, FLDS members paid monthly fees to the church, which typically came between $500 and $1,000. Members were also under threat of losing their jobs and homes.

In 2005 Jeffs was charged with two counts of rape

He was also charged for being an accomplice in Utah for planning a marriage between a 14-year-old and her 19-year-old cousin. But he hasn’t been seen in public since 2004, according to the FBI archives. The FBI reported Jeffs as wanted, its archive states: “Jeffs has been charged in Arizona with two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, one count of conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Jeffs was also charged with rape as an accomplice in Utah.”

Before his arrest, Warren Jeffs was on the FBI’S Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He was arrested in 2006 and apparently he had several phones, wigs and disguises on him. He was also reported to be carrying around $55,000 in cash.

He didn’t go on trial until 2011 and he represented himself

Despite his arrest in 2006, his trial didn’t occur until five years later. He represented himself and CNN reported he was convicted on two counts of sexual assault of a child on August 9 2011, he was sentened to life in prision.

In 2011, Warrens was placed into a medically induced coma

At the time, ABC News reported Warren Jeffs had become weak from fasting for three days. However it was never revealed why he went on the fast. Whilst he was in the coma, he was treated for other medical conditions, one because ulcers on his knees from praying in his cell.

Who runs the FLDS now?

Despite being in prison, Warren Jeffs still runs the FLDS according to one of his daughters, Rachel Jeffs. He’s allowed visits from family members and is allowed to send letters to approved contacts. He won’t be considered for parole until July 2038, at which point he will be 82-years-old.
