Meet the big names shaking up clubbing in Leeds
We have a reputation for a reason
From Beaverworks to Hifi, Prelinks is changing the way you nail your nights out in Leeds.
The app gives you a weekly breakdown of events in Leeds, from club nights to one off gigs and live artists. You’ll get the low-down on the type of music, location and how many people are going.

If you’re dying to go to Beaver Works but your housemates drank themselves into oblivion last night, you can see which of your Facebook friends are going on Prelinks, drop them a quick message and salvage your night.
The cherry on top? Once you’ve joined an event on the app, you can see the profiles of other people going. Then it’s time to get swiping, matching, and chatting before the night.
We spoke to some of the people getting nights outs right this term and asked them about their involvement with Prelinks, what the app does and how it’s making waves in the Leeds nightlife scene.

Poppy Betram, second year, English Literature
Poppy said: “My favourite night is Flux, because musically, they always nail it and it’s one of the only nights that literally gets everyone I know out.”
She also recommends checking out the West Indian Centre this year. She said: “It’s such a unique venue. They do nights like SubDub and Triple Cooked which are always great. The variety of events, clubs and venues in Leeds means there is never a dull night.”

As a Prelinks ambassador, Poppy has seen first-hand how the app is impacting the city’s nightlife. She said: “It makes it so easy to organise and arrange all of your nights out, as well as meeting new people in a city with so much going on.
“Prelinks is so useful for seeing how a night is shaping up, as you can scout how busy an event is going to be and make sure you beat the queues.”
Poppy loves chatting to new people. She said: “Prelinks is a great app for meeting people on a night out. The relaxed environment of a club means there is a lot less pressure or awkwardness when meeting someone. If you’re both attending the same night, you probably enjoy the same kind of music which means you already have something in common!”

Oliver Whitfield, graduate, Philosophy
When asked if he went out a lot at uni, Oli said: “Yes. One of the many benefits of studying humanities is the almost non-existent contact hours – 9am lectures were never an obstacle to fun.”
As a graduate of the university and city manager for Prelinks, Oli knows Leeds rather well. He said: “The city is definitely a trendsetter when it comes to nightlife. It’s the most on-point when it comes to cutting edge music, and it’s great to have such a wide variety of musical options, compared to the bait, chart nights of some other uni cities.”

Oli belives Prelinks makes a night out a better experience. He said: “It lists the nights ready and waiting for you, as opposed to Facebook which doesn’t list events in order of date. Rather than reading a Facebook event written by someone trying to sell tickets, you are instead given an impartial and accurate description. You’ll also see how many people will be going, what they’re like, and most importantly, if they’re the kind of people you want to meet.”
Oli wishes he had had Prelinks at uni. The philosophy grad said: “Within the first two weeks of uni, I would have blown through 90 per cent of my loan. This meant that towards the end of term, meeting a girl on a social app and taking her on a date was not financially viable. However, meeting them at a club night I was already going to would have been ideal.”

Patrick Quinton-Smith, second year, Business and Economics
“Leeds nightlife has a reputation for a reason. So, it’s only fair that I show my respect by taking advantage of all it has to offer.” As you can probably guess, Patrick considers himself as a bit of a ‘yes man,’ but as a second year, he’s attempting to learn how to say no – which isn’t going very well. He said: “I struggle to turn down even the tame events. I’m overtly sociable, and slightly eccentric. I’m always on the lookout for the next best Hawaiian shirt, most of which I steal from my dad before term.
“The best night in Leeds is definitely UP4. It has gone from zero to a hundred in the past year, displaying heavyweight lineups across the DnB and Bass scenes. You should also check out one of Brotherhood’s insane nights out, where they often release the location on the night of the event – like the time they threw a party in an abandoned church.”

Patrick thinks Prelinks makes meeting people much easier. He said: “Obviously I try and match a few stunners before the event – it makes things far less awkward when you actually meet face-to-face. If you like them, great, but if you don’t, you just disappear and go find your friends again. It honestly makes life so much easier.”
Patrick became a Prelinks ambassador because he believes in what the app is about. He said: “Most people crack a smile the moment they realise what it actually is. This makes my job really easy. People do just love it. I’m expecting big things for it this year.”

Charlotte Kennedy, second year, English Literature
Second year Charlotte said: “Donuts is my fave night – all the way. It’s got great music and is a welcome break from the more intense nights. You can always rely on them to bang out some of the old school classics. It’s also just a walk away for everyone who lives in Hyde Park.”
Venue wise, Charlotte says that Beaverworks takes the top spot. She added: “They have a great big fire outside, which helps you dry your sweaty faces. Wire is always good if you don’t want to be overwhelmed by people, which is easily done in Leeds.”

For Charlotte, the best thing about Prelinks is the ease of finding a new night out. She said: “Before, my friends and I would often find ourselves just going to the same nights, again and again…and again. However, now with Prelinks, you can see all of the different types of night happening across the city, without having to spend hours on Facebook trawling through.” Result.
