Leeds’ best bangers: The ultimate Leeds sausage guide

Sorting the saucissons from the saveloys

There’s nothing like a good banger, whether you like yours as a hangover cure or the main event.

Here’s the ultimate guide of the best sausages in Leeds.

Primo’s

For bangers in a bun, there’s no other option than Primo’s. Primo’s dogs come in two sizes: classic (who are you kidding?) and super.

Toppings include chilli, bacon, cheese, onions, pulled pork and steak. We’d recommend The Pittsburgh, a large beef dog topped with pulled pork, BBQ sauce and jalapeno slaw.

Prices come in at under £6 so there’s no breaking the bank, but for just £1.50 more you can double your dog. Find Primo’s in the Corn Exchange or Leeds White Rose.

Fat Annie’s

The guys behind these bangers have travelled the world creating great flavours to bring back to the North, so it’s no surprise all the dogs are hand crafted and made from prime cuts of meat.

Go for the Kaiser, a German bratwurst, or El Toro, a spicy chorizo sausage that packs a picante punch. The gang are always creating new specials for their events.

Sadly, Fat Annie’s doesn’t have a permanent home in Leeds yet, but they make regular appearances at Belgrave Feast and other foodie events in the North.

Whitelock’s Ale House

If the only bangers for you come with a healthy portion of mash, Whitelock’s is the best option. The oldest pub in Leeds keeps it traditional, and a plate of sausages and mash is just £10 with ale and onion gravy.

All Whitelock’s sausages are sourced from an Award winning Yorkshire butcher, so there’s no wieners here. Find them in Turk’s Head Yard just off Briggate.

Hyde Park Book Club

In the centre of student universe, Hyde Park Book Club is the only place for veggie sausages. The all-veggie café serves the finest vegetarian meat from the Veg Butcher.

The Hyde Park Hotdog comes with sweet chilli, teriyaki, piri piri or mayo. It’s only £4 so if you’re a veggie who loves a banger, head to Headingley Lane for your sausage fix.

The Greasy Pig

If you’re looking for quantity over quality, look no further than the infamous Greasy Pig. Found on Victoria Road, the Pig’s sausages might not be the best in Leeds but they win on sheer number.

Their Paralyser Breakfast comes with four sausages, so it’s the best hangover cure out there. If you do want to upgrade your sausage, they also serve the Big Dog, a meaty Bratwurst that comes with fried onions and fries.

Mrs Atha’s

Hipster café Mrs Atha’s is well known for its breakfast, and a sausage sandwich comes in at £4. They also have a vegan option available.

Each sandwich is served on thickly-sliced bread with as much ketchup as you can handle. Find the café behind Zara and House of Fraser and feast on their well-recommended bangers.
