Nando’s have more calories in their chicken than KFC

Not so cheeky

Nando’s bills itself as a healthy alternative, but now some food experts are saying it might be better for you to go to a more traditional chicken shop. According to the show Tricks of the Restaurant Trade, which is going to air tonight, portions of chicken from Nando’s have more calories and sugar than KFC. On the programme, nutritionist Amanda Ursell compares a Nando’s chicken wrap with a KFC Toasted Twister. They found the KFC wrap had 480 calories and 4.7g of sugar, while the Nando’s version had 594 calories with more than three times the sugar at 16.2g.

The show said the chicken and fries have more calories than KFC’s equivalent wrap

On the plus side, the Nando’s wrap did have slightly less salt when the sauces aren’t considered, but their chips also contain more calories. One portion had 546 calories, compared to 310 in KFC’s regular fries.

There’s also the matter of cost. Looking at the price for a meal, KFC’s version cost £4.59 with a total of 790 calories, and a Nando’s meal cost £8.45 and had 1,140 calories.

The show also found that both chains bought their chickens from exactly the same supplier – Moy Park. In the show, they look at one of their barns which contains 25,000 chickens.

Responding to the claims, Nando’s said:

“All our chicken is British, meets Red Tractor standards, and is grilled, never fried. Nutritional information for all our meals can be found on our website.”
