Unis with the greediest landlords

Who makes the most profit from your rent?

Greedy landlords in Edinburgh and Oxford squeeze the most out of us, while Lancaster and Aberystwyth are the most generous.

According to figures from property website Zoopla, the greediest landlords can be found in the Scottish capital and make the second most money from Coventry students.

Unlucky Scots Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow also have landlords with the highest yearly profits.

On the other hand, it’s good news for those at northern unis as landlords there don’t make as much.

Middlesbrough is the worst place to let to students, while Lancaster, Lincoln and Aberystwyth are equally as bad for a landlords profits.

Lawrence Hall of Zoopla said: “Scottish university cities are currently offering fantastic returns for UK landlords.

“Many Scottish universities are now internationally renowned, with thriving undergraduate and graduate environments.

“This means demand for rental accommodation in university areas is very high, as throngs of students compete to live near their campuses.

“Combined with Scottish house prices still remaining relatively low, this equates to excellent yields.

Speaking on the capital he said: “Some may be surprised that the golden triangle of London, Oxford and Cambridge are not producing higher yields.

“Given those areas have a pedigree of high property prices, buy-to-let investors there would likely spend a higher proportion of rental income paying off their properties’ mortgages than their counterparts north of the border.

But landlords aren’t all have bad.

Britain’s self-confessed coolest landlord is Bristol’s Rob Ho, who also works as a stuntman and has been punched in the face by Jim Carrey.

As well as making sure we keep up with payments, he’s starred in Skyfall, Kick-Ass 2 and even has his own upcoming independent action film The Landlord: Time to Pay the Rent.
