Bachelor of hearts: Student proposes to his girlfriend at his graduation

Event hailed as ‘the only uplifting thing to ever happen in Stoke’

Student Alun Thomas proposed to his girlfriend by dropping on his knee at his graduation and popping the question – in front of 300 people.

The 22-year-old, in traditional cap and gown, had just been awarded his degree in forensic science at Staffordshire University on Wednesday.

Stunned partner and fellow student Annie Rowe, 25, answered ‘yes’ and was gathered lovingly into her new fiancee’s arms.

Alun said: “Those 20 minutes after making my mind up were the most nerve-racking of my life.

“You can never be 100 per cent certain, but I thought she would say yes. We just go together so well.”

Alun and Annie, who live together in Stafford, met in their first year at university and have been together for three years.

Annie, who graduated in law on Thursday, said: “”After Alun’s graduation ceremony, we went outside where his faculty was going to have a group photograph.

“One of his lecturers called him forward.

“I thought he was going to thank them or receive an award and I got the camera out ready to take a picture. Then he called me up and Alun got down on one knee.

“It felt really unreal. I said ‘yes’ and everyone cheered.

“We have talked about weddings and the future but in no way did I ever expect that he would propose at graduation. It is just so surreal, a whirlwind.”

Alun – who bought the engagement ring three months ago – plans to return to university to study for a PHD in forensic science.

Annie has started work in legal services for Staffordshire County Council.

Lecturer Laura Walton-Williams said: “It was really nice. All the other students went up to congratulate them. It was lovely Alun chose graduation day to propose.”
