UW-Madison organization promotes student walk-out to protest Trump’s Inauguration

UW-Madison Socialist Student Organization organizes a walk-out from high school and university classes on Friday, January 20th in order to protest the inauguration of President-Elect Trump.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison officially started its spring semester on Tuesday, January 17th, and on this first day of class university students involved in a socialist movement eagerly handed out fliers plastered with pictures of Donald Trump.  The flier boldly advertises a student walk out from classes on Friday, January 20th–also known as the inauguration day of the highly controversial President-Elect Trump.

The flier encourages a city-wide walkout at noon on Inauguration Day, in addition to a Rally starting at Library Mall on the East Side of the UW-Madison campus. It appears all are welcome–including staff, high school students, and university students and workers.

Among the issues the flier covers is deportation, attacks against Muslims, and discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ community. All of these are important issues to local students and community members alike.

This wouldn’t be the first time Madisonians marched to protest Donald Trump as president–in November 2016, the election season brought about various large-scale and smaller-scale protests. Students, educators, and political enthusiasts across the area rallied to the Madison area to march from Bascom Hall to the Wisconsin State capital in response to Donald Trump’s win against Hillary Clinton.

While it is unclear whether the walk-out will reach the scale desired by the organizers, it’s clear the election of Donald Trump has made a profound impact on the Madison area.

Multiple UW-Madison academic buildings are emblazoned with old, chalk graffiti messages from November promoting voting on election day, some even specifically seeking a vote for Hillary Clinton.
