USC graduate wins 2017 Rhodes Scholarship

Winners are given full financial support to pursue their degrees at Oxford University

USC can now add a Rhode’s scholar to the list of successful and prestigious alumni it has produced over the years: Mr. Oscar De Los Santos from Laveen, Arizona is one of just thirty two of the 2017 Rhodes Scholars.

They were selected from a pool of 882 candidates who had been nominated by their universities.

According to their website, Rhodes Scholars are selected “not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead.”

Winners of the Rhodes Scholarships are provided full financial support to pursue their degree(s) at Oxford University in England; this is thanks to the Rhodes Trust which is a British charity that was set up at the request of Cecil J. Rhodes in his last will and testament.

According to his winner’s profile, De Los Santos graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in political science in 2015 from USC. He has interned for the National Economic Council as well as for the House of Representatives, and in 2012 was the youngest Florida field organizer for Obama’s presidential re-election campaign. He is currently working both as a lobbyist as well as at the Association of Arizona Food Banks as a manager of public policy.

“He has special interest in the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr; at Oxford, he plans to read for a Master of Public Policy and an M.St. in Theology with a focus on Christian ethics.”
