‘That book store with the cats’ is closing this summer

Red and Elmo were our favorite Chapel Hill residents

After 10 years of serving the Chapel Hill community, The Bookshop on Franklin Street – affectionately known to most UNC students as “that one bookstore with the cats” – is closing in July 2017. The owners announced the closing on Facebook.

The independent bookshop made a name for itself by selling quality old and rare books. It is Chapel Hill’s largest and oldest used bookstore. But really, we all knew it because its cats, Red and Elmo, sit in the window and love to be petted by all who enter.

We’re all sad about the closing, but we’re glad that they let us know that Red and Elmo have a safe forever home waiting for them. After years of roaming around the store and waiting at the door, the cats will be going to a new home where they can happily grow old together.

Go out and support this local business until they leave us this summer. Maybe bring a cat treat or two.
