Taylor Leath named Player of the Week

Carolina is ranked No. 8 in the AVCA polls

Carolina’s very own Taylor Leath earned Sports Imports/AVCA Division I Player of the Week for women’s volleyball today. She was recognized for her competence in the Florida State and Miami games over the weekend.

Leath was also selected as the ACC Player of the Week on Monday for the second time in her career.

Her notable performance against Florida State drove the American Volleyball Coaches Association  (AVCA) to select her as the first UNC athlete to be acclaimed as the National Player of the Week. Leath hit .360 with 26 kills and 13 digs against Florida State, attaining the most kills for a Carolina player since 2005.

Leath is a sophomore from Port Matilda, Pennsylvania. In addition to being on Academic Honor Roll for the past two years, the 6’3″ redshirt journalism major’s remarkable performance averaged 22.3 kills and 16 kills during UNC’s three victories against top-10 opponents. With Leath, the team was able to remain in the top-10 for their seventh consecutive week.

“To put it simply, I am very proud of Taylor and this program’s accomplishments so far this season,” said UNC Women’s Volleyball head coach Joe Sagula. “She inspired her teammates and they responded with a great team effort to be able to come from behind in numerous sets.”
