UNC field hockey defeats #1 Syracuse

Malin Evert scored Carolina’s game-winning goal

It’s called a walk-off victory in baseball. It might not be called the same thing in field hockey, but Carolina’s field hockey team won in walk-0ff fashion against Syracuse Friday night.

In the double-overtime win, the Heels knocked off NCAA #1 Syracuse by a score of 3-2.

The first overtime was a sudden death match and provided opportunities for both teams. Once the game entered the second overtime, it seemed to be only a matter of time for Carolina.

Syracuse deflected two beautiful Carolina attempts early in the period, but right after the second miss, the Heels regained possession. Sophomore Malin Evert quickly scored the game-winner with 10:17 remaining in the 15-minute overtime.

With the victory, UNC moved to 7-2 on the season. Syracuse’s first loss of the season drops the team to 7-1.
