We asked freshmen about their first UNC game day

‘It really made UNC feel like home’

For the newest Tar Heels on campus, the ability to attend almost all athletic events for free is like a dream come true. It’s easily the most important perk they get with their OneCard.

UNC Football played their first home game of the 2016 season on Saturday, stomping James Madison 56-28, making for some pretty excited freshmen after their first ever home game in the student section.

We asked a few of them how they felt, and after such a hype game, the responses aren’t surprising.

Katie, Ashley and Rose

Katie: “The student section was very fun and energetic! We all got involved and I feel like we all came together to support our team.”

Ashley: “It was really fun and exciting, especially with the marching band, the music and going out with my friends all dressed in Carolina blue. Standing there in the bleachers cheering the Heels on was great and winning the first home game made the experience even better!”

Rose: “For me, the best part of the game was standing in the student section. There was such a sense of community and togetherness when we all did the cheers in unison.”

Brianna

Brianna, right

“This was my first college football game ever and I’m really happy I got to experience it at Carolina. Everyone was unified, having so much fun and the atmosphere was really energetic. It really made UNC feel like home.”

Christian

“It was great. I’ve been to several games before since my brother went here, but it was actually really cool getting to be in the student section this time, and it was pretty electric being there.”

Jillian

“It was really fun. The atmosphere was great. It was fun to hear chants that everyone does, like when they say ‘First down, TAR!’ and everybody says ‘HEELS!’ I really enjoyed it, and I’m excited for next weekend when my parents will be here.”

Scott

“It was a lot of fun, it was great to be in that atmosphere, I mean, we won, which is great, but overall it was just a really great experience.”

Michael and Jeff

Michael: “Overall, it was pretty exciting. It was fun to see all of the school spirit out there – there were so many people. It was really hot, though. I’m from Chicago, so I’m not used to all of this Carolina heat.”

Jeff: “It was a lot of fun. There was a ton of school spirit, which is nice. It was pretty much the first big athletic event this year, so it was a different experience, but I liked it a lot.”

There you have it. A dominating win over James Madison was fun, energetic and even a little hot for freshmen. Let’s hope they keep up the school spirit next week against Pittsburgh and beyond, no matter what the temperature is outside.
