We asked UGA students for their weirdest roommate stories

‘My roommate would sing me a lullaby every night’

Moving away from home and starting college can be difficult. You’re suddenly thrown into a world with new challenges, new people and new places. For many students, it is also a new experience to be living in such close quarters with another person.

That other person, the roommate, can either add greatly to your college experience, or, sometimes, can be the reason that move out day suddenly becomes the most anticipated date of the year. I’m sure everyone has heard the many roommate horror stories that are told at family gatherings and circulate the internet.

There was even a horror movie about a murderous, obsessive roommate. And although most roommates don’t turn out to be crazy (hopefully), there are definitely times when the relationships between roommates are tested. Here we asked a variety of UGA students about their most uncomfortable, hilarious, or horrible roommate experiences.

Jocelyn

“My sophomore year roommate showed me that no matter how messy you think you are, there is always someone messier. My best friend in the entire world, I had no choice but to deal with piles of daily contact packages, old cups of juice, tissues, dirty clothes…you get the point.

“We even began naming the various bugs who visited our room, featuring appearances by Sheila the Shield bug, Meredith the moth and Nate the gnat(s). I learned a lot that year. I learned that I have more patience than I originally thought…and that my best friend should be featured on TLC’s Hoarding: Buried Alive.”

“I had a boy sleep over and I had to leave at like 8am, so I texted my roommate and was like ‘Hey, just so you know a boy is over so he might leave while you’re there.’ She instead went into my room, woke him up – he was butt naked – and asked if he wanted pancakes or French toast and made him breakfast!”

Alyssa

“Luckily, my freshman year roommate and I became best friends. Our first bonding experience was doing the ice bucket challenge in the Brumby bathroom. We would either match or wear similar clothes every day to embarrass ourselves. We also wrote a lullaby together. She would sing me the lullaby every night, even when I didn’t want to hear it. I still have the song saved on my phone.”

Steven

“One time we were both laying in our beds with the lights on debating who was turning them off. Being stubborn, neither of us did. So, I put my head under my blanket for about two minutes when we were talking about who was turning the lights off. I put my head up to realize that the lights were off. He did it extremely quietly somehow and played it off well. I was a little confused but mainly scared.”

“One time I left my apartment for a while to have a tonsillectomy. When I came back, I saw one of my roommates had made pasta in one of my pots. I knew this because she put the pot back in my cabinet, with the uneaten pasta still in it. She just left it in there to crust on for a week while I was gone.”

Carli

“So, my ex roommate was very passive aggressive. Like she would say things like, ‘My favorite thing is when my chair is pushed in.’ (I never pushed in my chair.) Or she would also be like ‘I love your shoes that are on the ground’ when my shoes were out and not away. She also would keep dinner mints in a bowl for our guests that I wasn’t allowed to have and she never left her bed.”
