Students for Justice in Palestine cause uproar after divestment announcement hours before Holocaust Remembrance Day

The organization swiftly apologized, denying accusations of anti-Semitism

UCSB’s Students for Justice in Palestine caused controversy on campus yesterday (Monday) with a poorly timed announcement.

On Sunday night, the student group stated their intention to divest from Israel. The announcement was published just two hours before the start of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Outraged students took to Facebook to call the announcement “disgusting”.

Students for Justice later released an apology on their Facebook page. They stated they “reject the notion that this is in any way anti-Semitic; the scheduling decision was made purely for pragmatic reasons”.

The pragmatic reasons cited were avoiding midterms and not interfering with campus elections.
