Why you miss your pets more than your family while away at college

Mom and dad, you’re a close second

When you left for college, you were definitely prepared to miss your parents, your siblings, your best friends, and all the comforts of home, but there’s a good chance you weren’t prepared for how much you would miss your pets. Whether you have a dog, a cat, or even a goldfish, missing them is truly the worst thing in the world, and you definitely weren’t ready for it.

They understand the struggle of wanting to sleep all day

Sometimes, you just need to stay in bed all day and watch Netflix. While your parents apparently don’t agree that this is a great idea, your pet knows that the only thing that could possibly make it better would be cuddling next to you.

They’re always excited to see you

In the pet world, this is the number one duty: run to the door (or sometimes, run out the door) and greet you the second you get home. Not only does your return brighten their day, but knowing that they missed you as much as you missed them shows how much you love and need each other.

They’re the best kind of therapist

Whether you just had a fight with your friends or family, are going through a breakup, failed a test, or even just have top secret info that you have to tell somebody, the only person who will be there for you without fail is your pet. Hugging them and/or crying with them while venting about your life is a foolproof way of getting out your feelings to a third party that will never tell your secrets.

You secretly miss giving them food from your dinner plate

Even though you were told not to, you just couldn’t resist giving in to the cries of your pet under and even on the table when you ate dinner; eating at the dining hall almost feels like it’s missing something now that you can’t slide your leftovers to your best friend.

They know when you want to be alone, but don’t want to be lonely

Sometimes, the best way to be alone is to be alone with a little bit of company. We all know the feeling of wanting to be alone, but not wanting to feel lonely, and it’s a given that your pet can sense when you just need some silent companionship.

A cell phone alarm clock can’t compare to them

Yeah, the alarm clock on your phone does its job, but nothing really gets you out of bed like being jumped on and licked by a small fur ball who missed you all night and can’t wait for you to be awake.

They will always be there for you

Even though they don’t really have a choice, your pet will always be there for you, through thick and thin. Their love for you is unconditional (even if it seems a little stronger when you’re holding a treat), and not being able to be with them every day is one of the main reasons we count down the days until our next flight home.
