Spend your summer participating in a mission trip to Honduras with other Temple students

‘The experience you’ll have will be indescribable’

It’s that time of the year again when everyone is attempting to plan out their summer by either finding their first internship, getting a full-time job or just relaxing after the semester is finished.

However, there’s another option for Temple students to consider since a group of Temple students are planning their annual mission trip to Honduras and the application is now available for everyone.

The program is called Students Helping Honduras, where their main goal is to end extreme poverty in youth through education and youth empowerment. The dates of the trip this year are from June 17th to the 24th.

The trip is new to Temple University as last year marked their first time ever doing it with only five students who went last year.

The village could accommodate up to 70 people and if your friend from home wants to join you on this trip—they most certainly can according to the Vice President of Temple’s chapter of Students Helping Honduras.

Hannah Spitz, the VP of the program, stated “Temple students are encouraged to attend but it does not have to be strictly Temple students.”

Throughout the week in Honduras, the food is provided by cooks associated with the program for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Past participants stated that the food was without a doubt delicious and you also get to stay in a hostel located in a gated community—which offers safety while sleeping.

You will have the chance to participate in many activities such as playing soccer, trips to the beach to cook some Honduran meals and even spending a night out in the city at a local karaoke bar.

Hannah talked about how much she enjoyed all of the activities with the community alongside the student organization.

“My favorite part of all was learning about Honduran culture and spending time with the kids, like playing soccer and different games,” Hannah stated.

As a group you fly into San Pedro Sula and travel to a village called Villa Soleada in El Progresso, Yoro, which is where the group stays.

The trip costs around $1200 but Hannah explained that as a group you will fundraise to receive some of your money back.

Additionally, people individually have raised enough money to lower the cost of the trip and this year their goal is to raise a total of $5000 as a group.

Hannah explained how rewarding the experience can be and she tells The Tab how it will change your perspective with life.

“You hear about poverty in the news and through pictures but you don’t know the extent of it until you are actually there,” Hannah said. “It put into perspective how great I have it and both the kids and community members end up teaching you more than you could ever teach or help them.”

As the trip comes to an end, you will have bonded with so many people and formed special connections. You are all there to do the same thing but everyone has different experiences and personal memories while doing it.

“I recommend students to go to Honduras with us if they are looking for a service trip and want to make a difference,” Hannah said. “The experience you’ll have will be indescribable. ”

The deadline to apply is not until April or May so if interested email [email protected] or visit their website templeshh.org to fill out a form.
