$150 for 20 minutes of phone sex: What being a college sugar baby is really like

‘Some guys ask how I’m doing while others simply ask me to kick them in the balls for money’

After learning that Temple University was the number one school for sugar babies in the country according to Seeking Arrangement, it’s safe to say we were all curious about the sugar baby life.

Two brave Temple students agree to speak out and as it turns out, it’s not as easy as it seems.

Between the married, father-of-twos and the fetish-crazed men who barely make enough money to support themselves, the site certainly does not attract the type of men our Temple Owls deserve.

Great talk?

Sure, there may be a handful of decent guys on the site, but for the two sugar babies who agreed to tell us about their sugar daddy experiences anonymously―it’s not how everyone thinks it is.

We first asked the sugar babies why they signed up and how the experiences went for them.

According to both of them, the process to sign up is almost too easy.

The site first asks you to enter your gender, what you’re interested in (sugar baby or daddy), and a valid email address. After you have signed up, the site asks about ten voluntary questions such as your monthly spending habits, body type, or what type of lifestyle you want to live as a sugar baby. Without entering any additional information, you’re free to begin browsing potential daddies.

Our first Temple sugar baby replied, “I signed up because I am really desperate for money and I was super naive about what the men on this site were expecting from me in the beginning.”

“Within an hour of putting up my first picture, I had at least 15 messages in my inbox. Some were nice and asked how I was doing or what I was studying at school, but for the most part they were straightforward and said they were looking for a no strings attached type of relationship. They would even offer an absurd amount of money to meet them and I have yet to actually meet up with anyone in person yet.”

The first message she received on Seeking Arrangement

Our sugar baby told us her bio simply states, “Struggling college student. Pay my tuition,” to which she thought would turn them off, but to her surprise it didn’t stop the sugar daddies from messaging her.

“One guy offered me $1500 per date and I really have no control over how fast it gets weird or how straightforward some can be. Usually they all start out asking how open I am to an intimate relationship. If I say I’m not, I usually don’t get a response back. If I say yes or maybe, that’s usually when they start to get really creepy. Some guys ask how I’m doing while others simply ask me to kick them in the balls for money, which I wanted to do but I was stood up by the poor guy.”

PSA: This man needs someone to kick him in the balls

While many of us struggle financially in college, sugar babies could earn a week’s worth of pay in one date.

How straightforward are you from 1-10

The life of a sugar daddy is no a joke, according to our second sugar baby, who tells The Tab she was blocked on the website for faking phone sex.

“One guy offered $150 for 20 minutes of phone sex. He was 47 and claimed he was single by choice but come on. He put the money into my account while me and my two other roommates faked phone sex. Between the three of us, we took turns talking dirty while holding back our laughs and we thought he bought it until he withdrew the money, blocked my number and my sugar baby account. Guess we got what we deserved.”

Talk about roommate bonding, am I right?

While this may not seem like the conventional relationship, Seeking Arrangement differentiates between a sugar baby and a prostitute:

“Sugar baby is a lifestyle choice, not a profession. A sugar baby is a woman who wants to date financially secure men who can provide her with the lifestyle she desires. She’s selective about who she dates; a prostitute isn’t picky about who she takes on as a client.”

Both sugar babies agreed they would never have expected dating a man older than their fathers, but the money makes it extremely tempting for both of them.

It’s reported Americans owe nearly $1.3 trillion in student loan debt with an estimated 44 million borrowers, and the average Class of 2016 graduate has $37,172 in student loan debt—up six percent from last year.

Students who have chosen to become sugar babies see an average monthly allowance of $2,400 by using the services of Seeking Arrangement and, since the average cost of tuition at public four-year institutions has increased by nine percent between 2011-12 and 2016-17, these college students are resorting to a new way of paying their college debt.

At the end of the day, I think it is safe to say finding love on a dating site that advertises STD testing may be a stretch.

We asked the Temple sugar baby if she will be continuing her search for a sugar daddy. She replied, “Probably. As weird as it is, it’s oddly entertaining if anything. I’m still not sure if this lifestyle is for me but I’ll probably keep looking for the perfect man willing to pay my rent. I just won’t be as naive going in this time.”
