‘Cuse: Do we party TOO hard?

Yes, there is such a thing

It’s no secret that Syracuse University is known for its killer party reputation. After all, we have been ranked among the “top ten party schools” in the nation countless times before. Of course, you’re thinking: Ok. We like to party. What’s wrong with that?

As it turns out, our party reputation may be doing more harm than good for countless students across campus. In between the beer pong tournaments, countless empty bottles of Svedka or New Amsterdam in the trash on Sunday morning and the cold, long walks back from Frat Row or Euclid, there is a serious drinking issue.

According to the Syracuse University Senate, the number of ambulances taking overly-intoxicated students to the hospital each week is growing. The Syracuse Committee of Life went even further by reporting the concrete statistic that 10-12 students are transported weekly. Although this number may seem low for a weekly total, when you add that total up for each week of the entire school year, the number of students affected is large and rather startling.

Written in an article published on Syracuse.com, ‘Cuse was ranked as the No.1 party school in 2014, No.5 in 2015 and No.8 as of 2016. Although it seems as the ranking is heading out of its “Top Ten” spot, that does not mean alcohol related injuries are happening less. In fact, it’s the opposite. The Daily Orange reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, the number of students hospitalized reached over 200.

I know what you may be thinking. We’ve all had a little too much to drink every once in a while, what’s the big deal? The truth is, alcohol poisoning and other serious alcohol-related incidents have the ability to affect anyone who drinks, if they allow it. In just my freshman year alone, I have seen countless students from my residence hall stagger in completely trashed at 4 AM on a Sunday morning and I have heard too many ambulances rush to Sadler or Lawrinson to scoop someone up on a stretcher to only transport them to a hospital, pump them with fluids and send them back on their way.

Friends don’t let friends drink too much. Know your limits before you decide to kill 4 shots or shotgun a beer.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to lecture you (trust me, we all get that enough from our parents). I just think all of us ‘Cuse students should take a step back and make sure when we party, that we are following the law and partying smart.

Before you party, know your limits and have a plan if you drink a little too much so your night of fun doesn’t turn into a complete and utter disaster.
