“Great Gatsby” Director Baz Luhrmann to address Princeton on 2017 Class Day
He will speak on second day of commencement ceremonies
Princeton announced its 2017 Class Day speaker selection Wednesday afternoon. According to a University Press Release, Baz Luhrmann has been selected to speak on Class Day, the second day of commencement ceremonies. He will speak on Monday, June 5th.
Luhrmann was born in Sydney, Australia, according to the press release. He is known for “The Red Curtain Trilogy,” including “Strictly Ballroom” (1992), ” Romeo + Juliet” (1996) and “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. His other feature films include “Australia” (2008) and “The Great Gatsby” (2013), based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. Fitzgerald attended Princeton, which served as the inspiration for his book ‘This Side of Paradise.’
Princeton previously announced Anne Holton ’80 as the 2017 Baccalaureate Day speaker. Holton served as the 17th Virginia secretary of education. She is married to 2016 Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine.
