We asked Oregon if you can get out of finals if your roommate dies

It’s time to set the record straight

You may have heard your peers around campus talk about something along the lines of “if your roommate dies you don’t have to take your finals,” which was probably said in the midst of midterm and finals seasons. While we all hope our friends can do us a favor as we feel the stress coming on, don’t think it’ll get you out of what you need to be doing.

We asked Senior Director of Public Affairs Tobin Klinger about the procedure for such a circumstance, and here’s what he said:

‘If there’s some kind of life trauma, the counseling center will work with you to take the final at a later date,’ said Klinger.

‘You can’t get out of it per say, but you’re not expected to walk in the next day and take the test.’

Roommates are an important part of the dorm experience. The counseling and testing center will help make testing arrangements if a tragic event occurs

The campus was faced with a similar situation a few weeks ago, when a freshman girl was found dead in her dorm. This is an example of life trauma, where not only did it effect the girls’ roommate but other parts of the student body as well.

Safe to say it took some time for people to recover from that one and that professors would not expect her roommate to show up for a large test the next day.

Even though we get stressed from time to time, remember there are worse things than having to take a large test.
