BREAKING: Huge protest about to start at EMU

The march began at 6:30 and chants include ‘Fuck Mike Pence’

Trump’s election continues to fuel anger on UO’s campus, and students are rallying outside the EMU with plans to march at 6:30.

A group of more than 500 students are shouting “Fuck Mike Pence” and “Fuck Donald Trump”.

Although this is the third rally this week, students feel like some minority groups are feeling ignored. Student Samantha Alcantar-Florez, told The Tab:

“I think the necessary things are being said at this protest but I would like them to touch more on a Latinos background because more Latinos are being targeted now more than ever. A lot of people don’t know how much we fear for our families.”

“I feel it has an effect and it is going nationwide and it will send a message toward communities. Our teachers and staff should be educated to be sensitive to the students.”

Nevertheless, students are feeling disheartened by people’s reactions.

“I think it is necessary as civilians to express your right of freedom of speech and right to protest. I think silence is compliance. The specific terminology used isn’t exactly what I believe it, it definitely alright with me for people expressing their right. It is hard to insight change because Trump is president election. This poster makes sense (Dump the Electoral College) because the one chance she could get put into the white house is if the electoral college does a ridiculous radical change and decides to vote against Donald Trump which generally does not happen,” said Lauren.

“However the possibility is there and I’m disheartened with how certain things I don’t believe in are so negatively perpetrated. Students should stand with the minorities they care about and do your damn research. Do your research before you go protest and yell something. Figure out how the hell we can make America what it needs to be.”
