Spartans: Write for The Tab Michigan State

Do you bleed green and white? Do you love writing? If so, read on

Calling all talented Spartan writers!

The Tab Michigan State is a revolutionary online student news source written for Spartans, by Spartans. We pride ourselves on reporting the most provoking, interesting, relevant and important topics that you and your friends are actually talking about on campus.

We have positions available for writers interested in providing sharp reporting on the college experience at MSU, from student life to breaking campus news. If you are an aspiring young journalist or talented writer, we want you on our team.

Our team meetings are #lit

Our writers work with campus editors, as well as professional journalists at The Tab’s headquarters in New York to ensure articles meet a high standard before being published. The Tab Michigan State’s very own campus editors, Laina and Emma, work with writers individually to build up their writing skills and help them develop story ideas.

Our unique student news site publishes a mix of breaking news, opinion pieces, features and profiles, lifestyle guides, fashion pieces, and serious reporting. We’ve been responsible for breaking some of the most talked-about news stories on campus, like the racist comments of an MSU student that went viral, as well as plenty of fun, lighthearted pieces like what your favorite MSU frat says about you.

We do not require previous journalistic experience, and although journalism/professional writing/communication majors are preferred, a love for writing is by far the most important quality we look for in new team members.

Writers are encouraged to come up with their own story ideas, but our editors are also there to provide ideas if we need them. We focus on our university bubble, because that’s where we find topics to write about that our Spartan audience will love.

The Tab MSU is just one of 70 Tab sites in America, and one 0f 120 Tab sites globally in an expansive community of writers at colleges and universities from the US to the UK. The Tab’s stories have been republished in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, and graduating reporters have gone on to work for Vice, Buzzfeed, The Guardian and Daily Mail, among others.

All this swag could be yours

Personally, my own experience with The Tab Michigan State has been amazing. As a first year journalism major, it has already prepared me so much for my future career by helping me improve my writing skills, identify and pitch stories that appeal to our readers, and get a taste of what being a professional journalist is like by experiencing story deadlines and meetings with our campus editors. The workload also doesn’t interfere with my classes, so I don’t feel like I’m overwhelmed with more work than usual.

One of my favorite parts of being a writer for The Tab is the fellowship program. By writing a minimum of three quality stories a month, you become eligible for the opportunity to spend two weeks as an intern working alongside our editors at The Tab’s New York headquarters.

If you are interested in writing for us, you can contact our campus editors Laina Stebbins and Emma Moller directly (via email at [email protected] and [email protected]), or you can sign up online at Rosebud.thetab.com.

Go green, and #doitforthetab!
