Ithaca College ranks top for reefer madness and college radio

Blaze it Ithaca

Ithaca College: home of the bombers, huge hills, far too frequent snow and…excessive amounts of marijuana? According to the most recent rankings of schools, IC takes the trophy for the top 420 friendly school in the country. Are we surprised? Definitely not.

The town of Ithaca, NY has been named one of the top hippie towns in the country for years now – which also correlates to another high ranking on a Princeton Review list, #5 for Tree-Hugging Vegetarians. Those two ranking go together like Birkenstocks and flannels. Tree-hugging vegetarians could always go for a joint or two, am I right?

Why isn’t there a ranking for top college sunsets? Ithaca would get #1

Vegetarians love Ithaca – or Moosewood Restaurant, the famous vegetarian and vegan restaurant located downtown. The Moosewood Collective has published 13 cookbooks since its opening, and it draws tons of tourists – and Ithacans – in for a meal.

Another reason why these two ranking are predictable is because the Ithaca zip code was the top donor to the Bernie Sanders campaign while he was in the running for President. This also goes hand in hand with yet another high ranking on a Princeton Review list – the #5 Most Liberal School in America and the #16 school for Most Politically Active Students. Clearly Ithaca College feels the Bern and loves to burn.

Another bragging right we Parkies have (or members of the Roy H. Park School of Communication) thanks to the Princeton Review is that our student run radio stations are always fighting for a top spot on the Best College Radio Station list. This year we top the list at #1, bumping last year’s #1 school to #3. Suck on that, Hofstra.

Not only does our communications school rule the radio world, but the world of journalism as well. The Ithacan often ranks high on the Princeton Review’s list for the Best College Newspaper, and this year it received the #5 spot. Oh, and not to mention Ithaca has also been constantly ranked in the top 20 for Best Journalism Programs across the country. I guess we’re just the best at everything.

We also have a pretty sweet theater program, which landed us at the #14 spot for Best College Theater. It’s an extremely difficult program to get into and also puts on a ton of shows throughout the year, so if you haven’t been to one yet, GO. One of my favorite Ithaca theater alums, Aaron Tveit ’05 (star of Grease: Live and my personal favorite show, Gossip Girl) will thank you.

For being a college on the smaller side, Ithaca sure has some top notch programs that its students can take part of. Just make sure you save some time for IC’s good ol’ friend Mary Jane, too.
