Rent-A-Puppy is the greatest annual public service at IU

Here’s the adorableness you missed at Dunn Meadow

The Bloomington Animal Shelter and Lutheran Campus Ministry held the cutest fundraiser this Thursday at their fifth annual Rent-A-Puppy event.

A student could pay $5 to play and cuddle a puppy for a half-hour session, i.e. the best 30 minutes of their entire dead week — if not their whole semester — if not this academic year. Aside from being a great way to raise money, it was advertised as a de-stress event for students. The Facebook event page showed gave a preview of the pups that were to be at the event to help boost excitement.

People started lining up to sign up for spots over an hour before the event was to begin. But for those who weren’t able to get a spot, there was a Puppy Kissing Booth where $2 would get you five minutes of playtime.

After getting my 30 minutes of puppy love (shoutout to Ladybug for being the cutest ever), I went around and talked to some fellow Hoosiers about Dead Week, stress, and — of course — puppies.

Jacob Bricker, Freshman, Clarinet Performance

How is your Dead Week so far?

It’s going pretty slowly. I’m just trying to make it through and do the best I can.

How is your Dead Week going?

What even is a Dead Week? This feels like a very live week with so much going on.

Natasha Harvey, Junior, Marketing

What about dogs makes school less stressful?

“Because you can cuddle them. Having that interpersonal contact and getting to forget about everything and see how innocent they are is really cute.”

Shruti Shivaramakrishnan, Graduate Student, Computer Science

“I’m actually scared of dogs, but I love puppies.”

Catherine Bustos, Senior, Theatre and Drama

What about puppies makes school less stressful?

“Holding this cuddle monster of fluff, they’re just so warm and playful!”

Nikki Sparks, Sophomore, Political Science and Criminal Justice

“I have a dog at home and I just love how happy and cute they are.”

All of the puppies brought in were available for adoption and the Bloomington Animal Shelter had a table dedicated to finding the floofs a forever home.

For more puppy pictures, attendees have been posting pictures to the Rent-A-Puppy event page.
