The 10 Commandments of Florida State football

Because at Florida State, we get religious with it

With just one short night until the Seminoles defend their newly designed home turf, the excitement is already in the air for Florida State’s fan base. Nothing feels more refreshing than waking up on game day with high hopes, and even higher expectations.

Here in Tallahassee, football is the one thing that can make the whole city stop and stare. Whether you are religious or not, we can all agree nothing gives us faith quite like Seminole ball. The almighty Bobby Bowden blessed us with a program that never stops chopping. As the legacy continues, let’s refresh our love for our Noles with the 10 commandments of Florida State football.

Thou shall cherish every moment with Jimbo Fisher

Just as we saw with Bobby Bowden, even the most storied sports careers will eventually come to an end. Cherish every nail-biting victory Jimbo orchestrates. With one National Championship in the books already, we know Jimbo Fisher will add to his legacy with more titles.

Thou shall know your history

The future is bright for Florida State, but one thing we can never forget is the past. Once you’ve been here long enough you start to notice just how many NFL players come out of FSU. If anyone ever asks, Deion Sanders is probably the best player to ever walk Florida State’s campus. In recent years, a huge number of talented Seminoles have proven they can handle the pros.

Thou shall know your present

There is nothing worse than being the person who still thinks our Quarterback is Jameis Winston. The guy under center is named Deondre Francois and if you have trouble with French pronunciations, just call him Frenchy and everything will be fine.

Thou shall master the art of rivalry trash talk

Respect between schools is important, but nothing is better than digging into some smack talk. Make sure you have a couple quick insults ready to fire out at your friends from UF and U Miami. You certainly can’t spell scum without “UM” and I’m pretty sure the Gator’s best player in history has been exiled to play baseball. Yes, I’m looking at you Tim Tebow.

Thou shall tailgate responsibly

While on game day Natty Light is an adequate substitute for water, don’t let the tailgating become excessive. Remember the whole reason we tailgate is for the love of the game and for the team. Don’t be that guy who ends up passed out with their shoes on while Dalvin Cook is running his heart out for you.

Thou shall respect Doak Campbell Stadium

Whether it be the unspoken rule that you can’t sit in the student section or the new stadium policy that banned the use of Seminole headdresses, if you respect Doak you will have a great time. Along with the structure itself, respect the fans within the stadium. Never forget what brings us all together: football.

Thou shall peep the Marching Chiefs

When halftime comes, you don’t want to miss the Florida State band. Their arsenal can range anywhere from a Beyoncé music video to the ambience of a Star Wars movie. Throughout the game, these musicians set the tone for the Seminole Nation.

Thou shall never miss a game day

Once the spring semester comes, we will all be begging for football season to come again. Take advantage of the few years we have as students and make every game day count. Even the early games make the atmosphere in Tallahassee unforgettable.

Thou shall proudly represent the Garnet and Gold

Every year we see people come to the game wearing a white tee shirt. Unless you go to a different school, you better be drenched in garnet and gold. You don’t have to buy a jersey but at least do the colors justice. Besides, there will be many occasions for you to wear your Florida State gear. Since headdresses are banned from the stadium we will have to get more creative with our fan attire.

Thou shall always have faith

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my time at Florida State it’s that there is no victory too large for a comeback. If you leave a game early because you think we will lose, I guarantee you will regret leaving. Seminole football is magical, and once you feel the magic, you are hooked forever. Just like we showed in the opener against Ole Miss, nothing is insurmountable when you chop hard enough, and Florida State is one team that won’t go down without a fight.
