Hunter students represent every other university except Hunter

Why?

Hunter College boasts a diverse student body. It should come as no surprise, then, when we even see diversity in school pride.

Although the Hunter College bookstore, located on the first floor of Hunter West, sells merchandise representing the Hunter name (why can’t we just get it free with our CUNY ID?), students seem to prefer traveling to other campuses to acquire their college apparel.

So why is it that so many Hunter students like to represent colors besides our beloved yellow, purple, orange and gold? Is it a lack of Hunter College pride? Does the fact that Hunter gear costs about a week’s worth of lunch deter students from entering the bookstore? Or is this simply a testament to the diverse backgrounds and context that each student comes from?

Whatever the case… what are you wearing?

Daniel Wang, 19, Physical Therapy

“I watch basketball and like march madness. I got this sweater before they won the championships, so it’s a bit of a pride thing.”

Kimberly Almonte, 21, History/English

“I’m actually a transfer student from Amherst and it’s my first semester here… I wouldn’t buy Hunter gear because of the price.”

Arturo Salazar, 18, Undeclared

“I live in Fordham, Bronx and I want to show people that this is where I come from.”

Richard Nportilla, 24, English Creative Writing

“I’ve been to an Ivy League and they have immense pride in their school. So do I. Hunter is one of the best CUNYs in my opinion and I think we often become jaded. This is my reminder.”

Nirmala Singh, 26, Educational Psychology (MA)

“I went there for my undergrad.”

Jasmin Calderon, 24, Romance Languages, Cami Sanchez, 20, Political Science and Demetra Panagiotopoulous, 22, Psychology

“I wouldn’t buy Hunter gear right now because I still attend the school. I’d feel a bit corny wearing that shirt while I’m still here.”

“I’ll buy it when I graduate. It’s more for nostalgia.”

“Yeah I would buy Hunter clothing. I want some Hunter Schwag.”
