Things to do at Bucknell that don’t involve alcohol

Our campus is a great place to have fun, whether you choose to remain sober or not

Bucknell is notorious for its drinking culture. If you’re straight tired of that, or hate conformity, or some fine mix of the both… here are some great ideas for extending your involvement on campus! PSA: they don’t involve drinking.

As time passes on campus, the notion of going out every weekend can begin to feel tired to some students. Sometimes a date night with Domino’s cheesy bread and Netflix can prove to be 12x more fun than the biggest rager going on that night. However, if you’re trying to cut down on the cheesy bread, here are a few other fun ways to get involved on campus.

If you love Jesse McCartney, or have long-term nostalgia with the year 2006, consider going to Fall Fest

Matt & Kim came last year.

If you’re lucky, you can get snazzy pictures with the headliner. I got that one above with Matt & Kim last year. They were pretty chill people.

Or, if music isn’t your jam, that’s cool too

The Campus Activities & Programs (CAP) Center is the home of ACE – which sponsors a ton of awesome events each semester. There’s also Casino Night happening TODAY! It’s 8pm in the Terrace Room. If you have a passion of dressing up somewhat fancy and re-enacting scenes from Casino Royale, then this definitely is the place for you.

Maybe you have a passion for art, but have limited funds

Or you absolutely hate art, but like messing around with paint. All are acceptable options. The 7th Street Studio is tucked behind the 7th Street cafe on the Smith Side. You can stop in and fiddle around, or explore some deep-rooted passion through a workshop. If you’d rather admire art than create it, there’s also the Samek Gallery in the ELC and downtown.

Maybe you hate art and being inside

If you’re itching to get off of campus, get involved with the Outdoor Education Department. These people are incredible, down to earth and always excited to get others into the outdoors. They’re currently accepting applications for BuckWild leaders, Challenge Course facilitators, and Logistics! Perk: you can take fun pictures like the one below.

Plus you could see some awesome waterfalls if you go on a hike at Rickett’s Glen State Park

Like this awesome waterfall.

It’s a pretty awesome waterfall.

If music is your jam, that’s great. You can join one of the many a cappella groups on campus. Or, if you only play an instrument, there are several groups on campus as well: jazz band, symphonic band, classical, and a student-run group called The Buck’s Orchestra.

The Buck’s Orchestra has performed at Chrysalis the past two years

They’ll also be performing at Fall Fest this year. They’re a fun time.

There are a ton of amazing groups on this campus that have information displayed on the InNetwork

The Black Student Union, BASA, the Bucknellian, Calvin and Hobbes, Cap and Dagger, the Gender & Sexuality Alliance. Explore something you haven’t tried before.

If you’re too busy to get involved with any more groups, there are peaceful areas such as the boat launch to relax and study quietly. Or there are always the volleyball courts by McDonnell and Vedder.

Our campus is a great place to have fun, whether you choose to remain sober or not. There are lots of possibilities – expanding networks of people via campus groups is a great thing to do and has led to me meeting some of the best friends I have on this campus.
