The men’s water polo team made a calendar

And no, you’re not dreaming

Did you know we had a men’s water polo team? Now you do, and you can also own a calendar of them posing in speedos.

Taking these photos started out as a joke at their championship tournament last year at Middlebury College, according to Jared Lorusso (’18), Vice President and social media chair. “As we stopped for lunch, we saw a field and decided it would be hilarious if we took pictures on it in our speedos. When we posted the pictures on our water polo Facebook page the reception was overwhelming,” said Rishi Jain (’17), team treasurer.

They stumbled upon a unique idea that would not only work as a fundraiser, but as a way to raise awareness of their team. Because water polo is a club sport, not as many people know about it, and therefore don’t go to their games.

They wanted to get the calendar out as soon as school started so they could have something to show their future teammates and fans when talking to them at Splash. The boys hope the extra publicity from the calendar will encourage more people to watch, and maybe even give water polo a try; there is a men’s and women’s team, and all experience levels are welcome.

Showcased in their 12-picture photo op is their lively team personality. They hope the student body sees their team spirit, which will in turn get more people to come out and watch their tournaments. “We really like that we had creative control over the calendar- we loved brainstorming fun ideas for pictures and having the guys get really into the photo shoot,” said Lorusso.

The photo shoot itself started out as a joke, but overtime became a more serious way of advertising for the team. The seriousness never took the fun out of it though, “especially when we went into the GSU Starbucks one morning and just got in line in speedos,” said teammate Will Bearson (’17). Some older folks were shocked, but apparently the BU students and faculty weren’t too surprised seeing a group of almost naked men.

Going around campus in nearly nothing can be a bit awkward. As teammate Paul Salamy (’19) said, the “first time was a little uncomfortable because I’m a big person, and I don’t look good in speedos. At first I was hiding my body behind objects, but by the seventh photo I didn’t care.”

The fact that such an abstract idea started out as a joke actually came to be, “is kind of unbelievable, but at the same time pretty awesome,” said teammate Christian DiAntonio (’19).

For a mere $10 you can help support the men’s water polo team, and get some bomb ass pictures to distract you from your impending due dates and midterms here.
