Jerry York is the winningest coach in NCAA hockey history

Passed the milestone last night

Last night’s win against UMass Amherst led head hockey Coach Jerry York his 1,000th career win. This milestone means more than another benchmark in his career, since he is the first and only NCAA hockey coach to obtain this achievement.

Coach York has had an epic journey, which led to last night’s 8-0 defeat of UMass.

York graduated from Boston College High School in 1963 and Boston College in 1967. He has won the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey title five times as a coach tying him with Murray Armstrong for second-most all-time.

His list of accomplishments doesn’t stop there.

He has won 1977  Spencer Penrose Division I Coach of the Year, 1982 CCHA Coach of the Year, 2004 Hockey East Coach of the Year, 2010 Lester Patrick Trophy, 2011 Hockey East Coach of the Year and 2014 Hockey East Coach of the Year.

His wins on the Heights are a BC record. He has recruited and coached two Hobey Baker Award winners, Mike Mottau and Johnny Gaudreau. Since coming to BC, Coach has had 14 players taken in the first round of the NHL draft.

Since York’s return to Boston College, in 1994,  York has led the Eagles to six Hockey East regular season titles, nine Hockey East tournament titles, six Beanpot titles, twelve NCAA tournament appearances, and four national titles.  During that span, BC has played in the National Championship Game eight times.

Coach Jerry York presented President George W. Bush with a BC hockey jersey in May 2001, the month after the Eagles won the national title. This was the first title during York’s time at Boston College.

On November 2013, York signed a contract extension to stay as the head coach of Boston College through 2020, which would be his 46th season coaching and 26th at BC.

During the 2014–15 season at Boston College, York passed legendary John “Snooks” Kelley for most programs win all-time at Boston College by nearly double. Kelley had 501 victories for the Eagles. The only other coach in the NCAA to come close to York is active Michigan coach Red Berenson with 824 wins.

Congratulations, Coach! And go Eagles!
