An honest packing list for freshman year at App State

If you don’t pack Chacos, do you even go to App?

I can’t wait to go back to Appalachian State and the gorgeous town of Boone. If you’ve started to pack to travel back up the mountain, I’m sure you could use a little help with what to include (and what not to).

There are, of course, the basic items like books and Tupperware, but there are also a few quirky items specific to App State.

Chacos

The shoe choice of App State during the warm seasons – perfect for hiking and walking to class up and down the treacherous hills.

Snow shoes

If you don’t want to slip and die, or become one of those people who needs a scooter to travel across campus because of a broken leg, I recommend packing some of these shoes.

Slack line

A slack line is similar to a tight rope, or that’s at least the way it’s used at App State. You’ll see people on Sanford Mall doing all kinds of flips and tricks. All you need is the slack line and two trees and an adventure is bound to happen.

Swimsuit

Today's adventures included a failed attempt to see volcán poás due to clouds, seeing exotic rescued wildlife, beholding this gorgeous waterfall, and a speedy tour of a coffee farm #appstate #AppStateStudentTakeover

Bring something to swim in because you’re definitely going to need it. Be sure to hit the waterfalls during the warm weather after a long winter.

Rain jacket

Typical rainy game day

The weather in Boone is unpredictable. You could walk into class when it’s sunny and walk out in the pouring rain. Make sure to have a rain jacket or umbrella on your person at all times.

An Eno

Nothing better than getting some homework done or having a bit of relaxation time by chilling in an Eno. As soon as the warm weather is here, Sanford Mall is covered with Enos. You can’t pass two trees without seeing someone in their Eno.

App gear

Appalachian shirts

If you’re ever wondering what to wear, App State gear is always a great choice. Buy a shirt that says App State or Mountaineers, or wear something black, white and gold and you’re good to go. The bookstore has a huge selection of merchandise, but you’re better off buying it ahead of time and packing it.

A spare set of sheets

Let’s be honest, you may need some spare sheets after a night out with your squad. One minute you or your friend is feeling a bit queasy, and the next, all hell breaks loose. Better yet, have an air mattress handy for these situations.

An extra suitcase

This may sound strange, but I can guarantee you will be going home with more stuff than you came up with. Why not be prepared and bring an extra suitcase?

Once you pack all of these things, you’re prepared to have the best years of your life at the best school in the world.
