It’s lit!

Hide Images

Long has Urban Dictionary been a safe harbor for the woefully uncool, informing them on the need-to-know slang and horrific sex terms you never needed to know.

It’s a classic millennial middle school game to gross each other out with the weirdest, most obscure terms on the site, but what are most common searches, probably by moms listening to mainstream hip-hop stations?

We investigated, and here they are: the most searched terms on Urban Dictionary.

Lit

This one is baffling as it would seem no one searching this term has any grasp of what context is. If you’re at a party and someone exclaims, “It’s lit!” what do you think that means? If your teenage child turns up a song with lots of bass and declares that it too is lit, how can you not use context clues? Moms of the world, do better. We love you.

Panda

Panda is perplexing because we know the search traffic all comes from the Desiigner song “Panda” but the problem is that within the context of the song, “panda” actually means…nothing. Undoubtedly, tons of people were confused when they Googled the song of the summer’s true meaning only to get the definition for an actual panda.

GOAT

Ok, fair enough — this is an acronym so it’s understandably confusing for the woefully unwoke. Those of us acquainted with the work of Kanye, though, have been comfortable with the term for quote some time.

Starboy

Fact: Moms love The Weeknd. My own mom calls him “the millennial Michael Jackson” and his songs are everywhere, so it makes sense that people would be searching the meaning behind his hit single. TBH, in the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t know what starboy meant either. I thought it was a play on Bowie, so I guess I’ll see myself out.

Trolling

Trolling is now in the actual dictionary and it’s pretty ubiquitous even in real news but its popularity on Urban Dictionary is probably due to mega-hit Black Beatles by Migos who sing, “She says she loves me, I think she’s trolling.” She probably is, honestly.

Hipster

If you don’t know what hipster means by now, wyd??

Woke

Are you now woke to all of these terms? Good. Job done.

Fuckboy

Honestly, it’s good to have a clear, straight-forward definition of fuckboy as it’s the focus of soooo many pieces from certain women’s sites.
