Anti-Semitic annotations found in a Warwick library book

One said ‘surprise, surprise, yet another Jew!’

Today a history student has found anti-Semitic comments written in a book in the Warwick university main library whilst researching for an essay.

The book in question, titled ‘South Africa and Apartheid’, contained several comments which have heavily racist connotations such as ‘Belsen was a gas right?’ making a reference to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Alongside using the word ‘enniggered’ to replace to the word ‘enlightened’ when describing an anti-apartheid party.

It also contained several comments that singled out Jewish writers and activists.

Next to them are small illustrations of the star of David and various comments such as ‘Surprise, surprise, yet another Jew!’.

Warwick JSOC has commented : “Once again we are very shocked to see another expression of anti-Semitism on our campus. We understand that it is complicated for the library to take actions because the book was on a shelf accessible by all.

“However this doesn’t mean that we will remain still. We are currently talking with the library to find a more sustainable solution.”

The university have been approached and are yet to respond.
