Burglars steal £20,000 in computer equipment from Glenside Campus

Police are investigating how he dodged tight campus security

A daring burglar made off with £20,000 of computer equipment from a uni building last month.

Over 150 Learnpad Octavo tablets were stolen from the Glenside Campus in Fishponds, which have an estimated worth of over £20,000.

The burglary is said to have occurred between 2:30pm on Tuesday 9th December and 10:40am on the following day.

Avon and Somerset police have stated they are asking people who may have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the stolen tablets to speak up and contact the police immediately.

A spokeswoman for the police said: “The premises in Fishponds were broken into and over 150 Learnpad Octavo tablets, which were intended for student use, were stolen.

“We would like anyone who recognises the tablets, has seen them offered for sale or has any information about the burglary to contact us.”

University officials have confirmed the burglars were able to evade the 24/7 security provisions in place on campus to try and prevent these types of incidents from occurring.

Annette Hennessy, speaking on behalf of the Glenside campus security, said: “We have few incidents of crime, which is testament to the existing level of security provision, however this is continuously under review and a number of enhancements are planned”.

“Despite the specific security systems in place such as 24/7 security presence on campus, and the use of a range of security systems including access control, physical locks and CCTV, a couple of things that will always assist the university in minimising any crime is for staff and students to report anything they see that may be suspicious to our 24-hour control room on 0117 3286404”.

One student from UWE, Eliott Benoist, said: “It’s crazy to think how someone could manage to walk out with so much equipment without being noticed. To me that doesn’t make sense when there are supposedly so many security provisions in place”.
