The results, however, were overshadowed by the violent behaviour beginning in the men’s football with Brighton students burning Sussex banners, which then escalated during the men’s rugby.

The match was cancelled after flares were thrown and streakers invaded the pitch, as well as bottles being thrown into crowds, leading to police involvement and reports of students being admitted to A&E. Co-op, Falmer and East Slope bars were temporarily shut down because of the escalating violence.
