Broke this Valentine’s? Here are some thrifty date ideas

Who said romance has to be expensive?

Valentine’s day is around the corner and you want to spend quality time with your loved one. But, of course, you’re broke and you don’t know what to do or where to go. Fear not, we’ve got you covered. Here are some date ideas that won’t break the bank:

Cooking and baking together

Or share some ramen

Or just share some ramen

We’ve all heard of the saying “sharing is caring” and for many of us, food is the way to our heart. You can never go wrong with this classic – you’re making an effort and it shows you care. Besides, it’s cheaper and more intimate than dinner at a restaurant and, if you cook together, it’s even more fun.

Have your own version of a spa at home

This is a bit more intimate but if you are comfortable with each other, then why not relax on a Friday night with massages and carrying out your skincare routine?

Netflix and chill

This one is also a classic but efficient: grab some snacks, get in bed for a cosy night in watching series or movies while cuddling (and maybe more).

Video games marathon

This is when you see your partner’s true self. Warning: you may end up hating each other after a Mario Kart tournament, but a laugh is guaranteed.

Teach each other something

If you are passionate about something, have a special talent or skill, then use it as a way to bond. Your partner will enjoy learning more about your interests and getting involved in them.

Board games night

Although there aren’t many two-player board games, you could invite another couple over for a fun double date.

Tea/coffee and cake dates

Sometimes keeping things casual is a better option, especially if you don’t know your date very well. Spending a couple hours on coffee dates is a great way to get to know someone. There’s not as much pressure as going for lunch or dinner, and it isn’t as costly but still relatively intimate.

Taking a class together

DIY-addicts will probably enjoy this the most. It can be a physical or creative activity such as yoga, crafts or painting. Affordable classes are easy to find, it’s fun and you’ll learn a new skill.

Wine-tasting and brewery tours

This is the greatest experience for those who want to get drunk – but tastefully. You will learn (but also forget) a lot and have the time of your life.

Open Mic night

Keep an eye open for these. Everyone has a good time at Open Mic nights, you can find plenty for free or very cheap entry.

Picnics

This is old school and that’s why we love it. If the weather is willing to cooperate, then it’s a really sweet and inexpensive alternative to eating out.

Being sporty together

This can be working out at the gym together, going roller-skating, hiking, going for a walk or a jog, bouldering – the list goes on. It’s healthy, fun and you can include it into a routine. What more could you ask for?

Art exhibitions and museums

Getting turnt with Jesus

Getting turnt with Jesus

If you are both art or history junkies, here is your chance to enrich your brains, take good pictures and spend quality time with your partner. Bonus: many museums in the UK are free entry, so you have no excuse not to take advantage of this opportunity.

Remember to bring your student ID so you can benefit from student discounts when going out. Now that you don’t need to worry about money, you can fully enjoy your Valentine’s day date(s).
