Benedict Cumberbatch movie being filmed in Brighton

The Royal Pavilion is being used as the location for the star-studded film

The Royal Pavilion Gardens are being used as a filming location for a star-studded film titled ‘The Current War’, in which Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of American inventor Thomas Edison.

The gardens are being used to create the 1893 Chicago World Fair, where Thomas Edison and rival George Westinghouse battle to win the contract to be the one to provide lighting for the fairground at night.

The film follows Edison and Westinghouse in their competition to be the inventor who will provide electricity for the United States. Nicholas Hoult, of Skins and X-Men fame, also appears in the cast full of British stars.

Executive Producer Ann Ruark said, “The Royal Pavilion has given us the ideal setting to recreate the 1893 Chicago World Fair, where Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse battled for who would provide electricity across the land.”

She added, “We are truly grateful to Brighton and Hove City Council for being so accommodating and welcoming us to the city.”

Councillor Alan Robins of Brighton & Hove City Council said, “Brighton & Hove is a fantastic location and has been the setting for many film and television shows. We’re always keen to explore opportunities to showcase the city to audiences around the world in this way.”

The Royal Pavilion will re-open to the public on Saturday.
