Did you know, there is a third bar on Sussex campus?

It’s like our very own Room of Requirement…

So you thought Sussex only had two bars, right? East Slope and Falmer. The staples. The mainstays that are always there when you need a cheap mixer in your life.

Well, actually there’s a third – called the IDS Bar. Confused? Us too.

Located behind the Silverstone Building (in itself a mystery to most students), the IDS Bar is open from 12:00-14:30 and 17.00-21:00 on weekdays, making this perfect for your day drinking needs. Late-nighters are so overrated.

You will no doubt stumble across the majesty of the IDS when you least expect it, and most dearly need it. It can be so many things to so many people. A meeting room. A chilled getaway from the stress of the library.

In reality, it’s a strange, remote cave whose primary audience is presumably those not quite hip enough for East Slope, or for those avoiding an ex who works in Falmer.

The one question that does spring to mind is, who actually goes here?

I’ve never once heard someone scream: “Let’s hit up the IDS tonite lol”, or “hey, there was a crazy party over at IDS yesterday”. It just doesn’t happen.

Surely someone must visit it. Perhaps hipsters convene there in hushed circles, burning with smugness at how alternative their IDS-poured craft ale will be.

Alright, so this is all a tad unfair. The IDS Bar serves precisely that, the IDS (Institute of Development Studies). Its purpose is not to compete with the watering holes at Falmer and East Slope, but to feed breakfast, lunch and dinner to those who work there. As a result, the atmosphere is more like that of a traditional pub. Interpret that as you will.

Still, would be cool if it was a secret hipster bar, right?
