Southampton student wins Euromillions Jackpot

Courtney Davies and her family won the £61.6m jackpot

A first year psychology student from Southampton has arguably had the best summer holiday any university student could ask for – by winning the Euromillions jackpot and pocketing an astonishing £61.6m.

Courtney Davies won  as part of a five-strong syndicate involving sister Stephanie, her sister’s  boyfriend Steve, mum Sonia and mum’s partner Keith. Courtney will start her second year at uni £12,220,488.58 richer.

Courtney Davies spoke about how if it hadn’t been for a phone call from her mum, they wouldn’t even have bought a ticket. Despite being on holiday in Florida, Sonia made an urgent call to Courtney’s sister to get her to purchase six Lucky Dip tickets because she was feeling lucky.

Courtney believed “mum was mad for calling me from holiday but they were so insistent”. Stephanie bought the tickets from the Overmonow Garage in Monmouth and it ended up being the best purchase she ever made.

Detailing their reaction, Miss Davies said they had to lock all the windows and doors before whispering their celebrations “just in case someone could hear that we had won”. Sonia Davies initially thought something had gone wrong when Stephanie called her later that evening. “I thought she’d told me she’d lost her dog. Then I heard Steve shouting we’ve won £61 million!”.

So when asked what she planned to spend her winnings on, what did Courtney say? Leave uni? Go travelling? Buy a house? Nope – she’s planning on buying a new electric toothbrush.

If anyone wants to dream that they may have won too, the winning numbers were 1,21,26,40, 50 and Luck Stars 2 and 4.
