These are all the best spots in Sheffield to take your Valentine’s date

Don’t forget the flowers and chocolates

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, why not take advantage of Sheffield’s ideal dating locations.

Many of us share a love-hate relationship with this particular day of the year. On the one hand you might find it super cliché and utterly futile, yet you can’t help bagging yourself a few heart shape choccies from Sainsbury’s and admiring the wit or excessive levels of cringe on Valentine’s Day cards.

Whatever your feelings towards this lovey-dovey day are, why not take a bow out of Cupid’s stash and give the dating thing a go. Whether it’s Valentine’s or Galentine’s Day for you this year, one of these places is bound to impress.

The Botanist

Making its Sheffield debut back in 2016, the Botanist is an absolute gem of a restaurant with an insane menu and fabulous decor. In fact, you will most likely spend the first ten minutes of your date discussing how cool the botanical themed interior is. It is located in the city centre on Leopold Street, meaning a range of after dinner activities are well within reach including the cinema and theatre.

You can opt to stay downstairs and have drinks in the bar or continue upstairs into the restaurant for food. The chicken kebab is a must for the main course though you equally can’t go wrong with the classic fish and chips. If you’ve got room for a dessert, the cookie dough skillet is dreamy – and hey why not go with the dating cliché of sharing and ask for an extra spoon. Main dishes range from £9.95-£16.95 so all in all not too pricey, certainly not for what you get.

The Peak District

What’s more romantic than a long walk around the Peak District with your date? The stunning views of the Peaks are guaranteed to make a successful date. For something extra special, though arguably better suited for a warmer climate, why not take a picnic? If British weather becomes an obstacle which, let’s face it probably will be the case, then a pub lunch is the way to go. The Fox House is a ideal place to indulge with comforting pub food in a cosy atmosphere.

Botanical Gardens

If the Peaks are a bit much and a gentle stroll is more your thing, the Botanical Gardens are an ideal place to take your date. Walk through the tropical plant exhibition and explore the bear cave before sitting amongst the abundance of flowers and decadent water fountain.

Sugar

If your tastes lean more to those of the sweet variety, you don’t need to look any further than Sugar on London Road. This dessert lounge is open from 16:00 until 22:30 Monday-Sunday and is ideal if you’re not looking for a three course dining experience but would still like to satisfy some food and sugar cravings whilst on your date.

They offer a variety of ‘luxury desserts’ including red velvet cake, warm cookie dough, waffles and more sugary goodness. Let’s not forget the decadent milkshakes and scoops of ice cream that can accompany your dessert of choice.

The cinema

A date at the cinema is when you can practice the ‘move’ depicted in just about every chick flick out there. Is it really a cinema date if the guy doesn’t yawn whilst strategically stretching out his arm and placing it over the girls shoulder?

Sheffield’s city centre is home to an Odeon and Showroom Cinema. You can equally venture out to Meadowhall for a spot of shopping, dinner and a film at Vue Cinema. Valentine’s Day just so happens to be on a Tuesday this year so if you or someone you know has two for one with Meerkat Movies on a Tuesday or Wednesday you can save yourself some pennies. Recommended films to see this month are La La Land, Split and of course who can forget the forthcoming release of Fifty Shades Darker.

Revolución de Cuba

Because where there is food (and cocktails) there is love. Revolución de Cuba, situated just off West Street, definitely has got the party atmosphere down. If you’re a fan of all things beginning with ‘T’ (tacos, tapas, tequila…te amo?) this is the place to go for a date. The interior is spacious and decorated to make you feel as though you’ve been transported to Cuba itself.

To make the most of your Revolución de Cuba experience, you should take your date during happy hour. Take advantage of their 2-4-1 cocktail deal from 15:00-19:00pm Monday – Friday and 17:00-19:00 every Saturday. Or why not book the special Valentine’s cocktail masterclass and try to avoid cheesy pick up lines and puns because that will just be guacward.

Valley Centertainment

Centertainment is situated in Don Valley and is easily accessible by tram or car. It has a huge range of activities to make a fun date. With bowling, Lazer Quest, Cineworld, mini golf and plenty of restaurants, you most definitely will not find yourself getting bored.

Theatre

With the Lyceum and Crucible Theatres being located within the buzz of the city centre, the theatre is an excellent option for a post-dinner activity. They put on an abundance of amateur and West End performances. As a student you can take advantage of the Live for Five offer where tickets are released for a selection of performances a month in advance for just five pounds. Recent shows that have been included in this offer are include Sister Act, Ghost, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Guys and Dolls. Be sure to keep up to date with upcoming shows before they sell out.

Kelham Island

Take a trip to Sheffield’s very own Kelham Island to soak up some of the history of Sheffield’s steel industry and eat some glorious food from independent cafes and restaurants. Start your day with brunch at the Depot Bakery before heading to the Kelham Island museum. Be sure to end your visit to Kelham island with a top quality pint from the Fat Cat.

Alpaca Farm

Definitely not your typical dinner date. The Alpaca farm situated in Quickshaw Farm on Fulwood Lane is home to the cutest, fluffiest Alpaca’s. Unless you or your date visit Alpaca’s on a regular basis (hey no judgement here) this is sure to be something different that will make your date extra special and all the more memorable. A ticket to see the Mayfield alpacas cost just £3.50.

For food, the Paddock Coffee shop and Bistro has got you covered. Scroll through the many Alpaca selfies taken throughout the day as you relax in front of the log burning stove with coffee and their delicous homemade carrot cake.
