A Hallam second year is using social media to re-home vulnerable dogs

Eve Moore, a second year from Hallam, has been using social media to send vulnerable dogs to better homes.

Eve first started rescuing dogs in 2014 after visiting a pound in Cyprus, where she was shocked and “horrified” at the condition the animals were living in. Speaking about her experience, she said: “It was a mess – there were just so many dogs. People who no longer wanted them as pets were tying them up at the front gate or dumping them over the wall, waiting for one of the pound volunteers to realise another dog had been left.

“I’ve visited some shocking pounds and seen some horrible examples of dog cruelty whilst I’ve been rehoming dogs but it just makes you more determined to do something about it.

“It might only be a case of slowly rehoming one dog at a time but for that dog you have completely transformed their life.”

She now works alongside ‘Saving Pound Dogs Cyprus’ and using the Instagram @CyprusDogs to find the pooches new homes.

Since she began the rescue effort, she has re-homed puppies to some big names, such as Duffy, Noel Gallagher and supermodel Sophie Dahl.

During the rescue project, Eve was also headhunted to become the Rehoming Manager of Wild at Heart Foundation, the animal welfare charity. The pound was closed by the local council, and Eve worked to re-home a staggering 48 dogs, and raised 10,000 euros in just two weeks.

Eve now spends around four months a year in Cyprus helping the pound. She is passionate about re-homing, rather than buying purebred dogs, saying: “It’s believed you can find out more about the background of a purebred puppy than a rescue dog but people don’t realise the scale of backyard breeding. 1 in 3 puppies are thought to be the offspring of neglected breeding dogs.

“I think this is now coming to light and it’s great that people as high profile as Duffy, Noel and Sophie have made the decision to adopt rather than buy and be an advocate for rescue dogs.”

Eve wants people to stop buying purebred dogs

Eve added: “We have rescued dogs that have been skeletal, covered in parasites and with very little fur, and a few months down the line their adopter sends you photos of them playing in the garden with this incredibly shiny coat and looking healthier than ever.

“They go from being abandoned, starved and neglected, to living a completely new life. Some of these dogs are totally transformed once they are adopted.

“I never thought that my desire to help dogs in Cyprus would turn into a full-time job.

“I’m really proud.”
