Webber steps to victory in Union elections

It wasn’t even close

Stuart Webber and the STEP slate triumphed in yesterday’s Union elections – sending a crushing defeat to Zuleyka Shahin’s NOWorNEVER team.

It was a landslide victory for Webber, who won the presidency with 1055 votes to Shahin’s 442: a huge margin of 613 votes.

STEP’s Niamh Coote took the Librarian position, with Noah Lachs and Ssuuna Golooba-Mutebi winning Treasurer and Secretary respectively.

They also won four out of five places on Standing Committee. Shahin’s slate won the remaining Standing position, and just three out of eleven Secretary’s Committee seats.

This comes after a tense (and for the first time in a while, contested) election, where social media campaigning and the forming of slates was allowed for the first time.

Cherwell have the full results, which show NOWorNEVER falling well behind the STEP team at every stage of the election.

STEP said of their victory: “We’d like to thank you all so much for voting yesterday – we never could have dreamt of winning with such margins, and we owe it all to the help, support and love of everyone. We apologise for the incessant spamming but we hope you think it was worth it.

“Sadly, not all of the team made it on, but everyone gave it their all and, for that, we are eternally grateful. Thanks so much once again, and we look forward to producing an extraordinary programme of events at the Union over the next two terms.”

Webber added: “I would like to commend Zuleyka and the rest of the Now or Never team for their efforts and I wish them best of luck for the future.”

We are awaiting Shahin’s comment.
