New Trebles bar in Newcastle could be blocked by police and health officials

Please don’t get rid of our trebles

One of Newcastle’s newest trebles bar could be set to be blocked before it has properly even opened.

Basement has just opened its doors on Nelson Street but its dreams of providing cheap trebles to the locals may be stopped due to public health officials, police and counsellors.

The new bar opening could be argued to be a “nuisance and disturbance” to the local people and homes around Nelson street. With other bars spread down Nelson street there are complaints about noise and litter from takeaways and bars into the early hours of the mornings.

Basement opens 8.30 – 3 AM Sunday to Thursday with an extension to hours on Friday and Saturday to 4 AM.

Dawn Scott, Public Health Nurse Consultant at Newcastle City Council, said: “I wish to object to the granting of this licence as I do not believe that granting a license for a further on-trade premise within a cumulative impact policy area is in the best interests of the local population and does not promote the licensing objectives to prevent crime and disorder.”

The meeting to decide on the future of Basement takes place on the 27th October.
