Newcastle ranks 23rd in The Times Good University Guide

We’re joint 23rd with the University of Kent

The Sunday Times Good University Guide published today has named Newcastle the 23rd best university in the country.

Newcastle University has dropped one place in the table since last year, but we’re still firmly in the top 25.

Unsurprisingly, we ranked an impressive seventh for student experience.

Factors taken into account when compiling the league tables include entry standards, student-staff ratios, services and facilities spend, completion rates, Firsts and 2:1s and graduate prospects among other factors. The league tables do show interesting facts about the university.

The uni is still in the top 25 universities in the country but it’s has now dropped in world rankings. Last year Newcastle was 127th, in the top 150 universities in the world, but today its plummeted to 162nd pushing us out of the top 150.

The league tables reveal that Newcastle University is 11th for the Sports quality on offer. The highest student satisfaction results for subject taught at the university were were Archaeology (95.3%) and Art and Design (93.6%). The lowest student satisfaction results subjects were Mechanical Engineering (69.2%) and Business Studies (68.6%). The results this year show that Newcastle is doing very similar to their performance last year.

Newcastle is on par with the University of Kent who have jumped seven places from last year’s 30th position.

Newcastle University had 32,620 applications in this academic year but only offered 4,680 places to prospective students, a ratio of 7:1.

Last year Newcastle University came 22nd with student satisfaction at 85.3% (one of the highest student satisfaction rates in the country). But with completion rates at 94.2% and lower entry requirements the university were pushed down to 22nd.

Newcastle University Students’ Union was also recently analysed in the National Student Survey. The union scored 81% for student satisfaction: 1% down from last year. It meant that NUSU dropped out of the top 10 Student Unions in the country landing at 13th place.

Figures also revealed that Newcastle is no longer in the top 150 universities in the world.
