Tributes paid to beloved Loughborough graduate Daniel Wilkinson

Our thoughts are with his family and friends

A 26-year-old Loughborough graduate, Daniel Wilkinson, has tragically died after collapsing at a football match on Monday.

Daniel was a Shaw Lane defender, who was playing at a cup game at Brighouse Town’s St Giles Road stadium. Daniel was treated on the pitch before being taken to Halifax’s Calderdale Royal Hospital, where he sadly passed away.

Daniel played both BUCS and Midland Football Alliance football for Loughborough during his four years at the university, while also graduating with a degree in Accounting and Financial Management.

On hearing this devastating news, Loughborough University Football Club Head Coach Michael Skubala said:

“Our thoughts are with Danny’s family and friends at this difficult time. After graduating from Loughborough University this summer, Danny had just embarked upon the next chapter in his life, and will be sadly missed by current and former members of Loughborough University and the football family.

“Danny was both an accomplished student and footballer, who had a great life ahead of him. A young man with great character and liked by all, Danny had a positive influence on everyone he met in his time at Loughborough and will be sorely missed by those who knew him best.”

SU Jonathan Ako released a statement saying: “Today we were told of the very sad news that one of our recent Graduates Danny Wilkinson passed away. Danny was a member of the Loughborough family playing football for the Student team and being loved by so many of his friends and the staff here at the University.

“Reading some of the comments on twitter (see #RIPWilks) you can see just how highly thought of he was.

“Losing a member of our student community is heartbreaking, especially one so young and far too early. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Danny at this truly devastating time.

“We are immensely proud and humbled to have had such an amazing and talented young man as a part of our Loughborough family.”
