Leicester takes in hundreds through the back door

here come the hordes

Leicester uni has already taken in hundreds of students not good enough to get into either their firm or insurance uni places.

A total of 90 call handlers took over 4000 calls from desperate wannabe freshers as they frantically dialled the clearing helpline.

By lunchtime, over 5000 people had visited the clearing website in a frenzied clamour for spots.

University provost, Professor Mark Peel, said: “We are really pleased with the interest shown in Leicester and by the way in which hundreds of applicants are taking advantage of the opportunity Clearing gives them to find the right course and university.

“We are still accepting qualified students on many of our courses at the University of Leicester.”

Leicester third year Mike, who got his insurance place on an Engineering course, said:”I’m so glad I never had to go through clearing, sounds like an absolute nightmare.”

Across the city, DMU clearing and confirmation lines dealt with over 3000 sixth formers and were handling up to 12 calls a minute.

The university has 260 phone lines and 300 call handling drones to deal with the made rush.

A university spokesperson said: “The over-riding message to anyone who may not have got the grades they had hoped for is “please don’t panic and give DMU a ring.

“Not only do we have 260 phone lines open but we have 300 highly experienced call handlers who were students themselves not too long ago, ready to talk through all of the options available to you.

“We are furiously busy and, while we cannot guarantee everyone a place at DMU, we are ready and waiting to ensure callers get the best advice possible so they can start thinking about what their next steps might be.”
