Victoria Gate evacuated after a ‘suspicious package’ was found

More information as we get it

Leeds City Centre has been cordoned off this morning after a dubious package was found on Harewood Street, close to the new Victoria Gate shopping centre.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Police said that: “At 8:39 today, police received a report of a suspicious package in Harewood Street in Leeds city centre. A cordon has been put in place while the package is examined.”

There are reports that a bomb disposal team are on the scene, and that a controlled explosion is being planned by the military. There are reports on Twitter that a man was seen acting questionably after abandoning the package.

Paul Dunphy, an actor who was evacuated from his flat, described the package as “small, wrapped in tin foil and had a large aerial protruding from it like an old-style cordless phone.”

No further details are available at the moment.
