I let my boy mates dress me for a first date

It wasn’t a total disaster

Dressing for a first date can be one of life’s most stressful moments. You want to look glamorous yet effortless, like you gracefully woke up with a smokey eye and voluminous curls. You want to do Beyoncé proud but feel you can’t win against the double standards of natural vs. overdone.

That’s why I recruited two of my guy friends to channel their inner Gok Wan and dress me for a first date. After emptying the entire contents of my wardrobe onto the floor here’s what they came up with:

We encountered a few questionable fashion choices along the way that would have landed me a roasting on Fashion Police. At one point one of the guys legit suggested I wear skinny jeans under a dress – there’s a reason this trend was left in the 00s.

Despite not always seeing eye-to-eye the outcome wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected.

They opted for a white turtleneck, classic black jeans, simple black heels and a faux fur shawl for a timeless winter look that Carrie Bradshaw herself would have been proud of.

According to the boys, the combination of curly hair, a hint of fur and a less-is-more approach to makeup exudes approachability, while they advised me to stay away from an all-black ensemble to avoid intimidating my date. Interesting.

Overall the experience wasn’t as traumatising as I anticipated. Maybe we should all start taking advantage of our guy friends and recruit them as the personal stylists we always wanted.

Perhaps I’ll brave letting them do my makeup next time. Stay tuned.
